About
Cartoonist • Illustrator • Graphic Designer
I am a graphic artist by trade having earned my BA in Graphic Art in 2002. I have over 25 years experience as a professional graphic designer, however, it was cartooning that led me to this career. As a kid I was inspired by Looney Tunes and wanted to be an animator but as I got older I realized I would rather aim to be a comic strip artist and was more inspired by Peanuts, Garfield and The Far Side. I began a strip called Toon In (later titled Carrot and Ruf) which was published in a small newspaper called the Testimony. Over the years I discovered my humor actually worked much better as a single-panel gag cartoon. I began my gag strip called Highly Devolved (formerly Junk Drawer) in 2018.

Highly Devolved would fit best in the category of "Offbeat". It is a single-panel gag. There aren't recurring characters, the panel deals with varying subjects from everyday situations of normal people to the zaney "what if" situations when common tropes are in juxtaposition with other unlikely events. I began under the title “Junk Drawer” in the traditional style of ink on Bristol Board. I would then scan the image, clean it up and color it in Photoshop. I had to rebrand the strip due to a more high profile gag cartoon already using the name. When I renamed the strip, I also made the switch from traditional to all-digital artwork. I now draw on an iPad using Adobe Fresco and finalize the strip in Photoshop.
